Italian-born Jannik Sinner plays tennis professionally. He reached a global No. 124 doubles ranking on September 27, 2021, and a world No. 9 singles ranking on November 1, 2021, both according to the Association of Tennis Professionals. In San Candido, Italy, on August 16, 2001, Jannik was born. He was involved in football, tennis, and skiing as a child.
When he was thirteen years old, he decided to focus on tennis and relocated to the Italian Riviera to train with renowned instructor Riccardo Piatti. He entered professional competitions at age 16 despite having little success as a junior, and by age 17 he was one of the rare athletes to have won numerous ATP Challenger Tour championships.
In 2019, he entered the top 100, made his first ATP semifinal, and won the Next Generation ATP Finals in Milan, earning him the title of ATP Newcomer of the Year. He climbed much further in 2020, reaching the top 50. In 2021, he got off to a good start. He entered the ATP top 10 in November 2021, being the first player born in the 2000s to do so.
His first Major victory came against Stan Wawrinka in the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. He later defeated Mikael Ymer, John Isner, and Carlos Alcaraz to advance to his third Grand Slam quarterfinal of his career. He was two sets to love up when he was defeated in the quarterfinals by the top seed and eventual champion Novak Djokovic in five sets.
