Jesse Powell was an American R&B/soul songwriter-singer. He was born on September 12, 1971 in Gary, Indiana in the United States and he died on Tuesday September 13, 2022 at the age of 51 in his home in Los Angeles, California in the United States of America. He was discovered by Louil Silas Jr in 1993 during a local talent show. Following an artist showcase, Louil Silas signed him to his Silas Records imprint.
Three years later, he completed work on his debut album. His first single “All I Need” was written by Powell, Sam Salter and Laney Stewart and was released in March 1996. It received moderate airplay on BET and Urban stations, peaking at No. 32 on the Billboard R&B chart.
Later that year, a rendition of the iconic song “Gloria” was released as the second single. After starting production on his second album, he released the lead single, “I Wasn’t with It,” in 1998, becoming the first artist to have a single chart on the Billboard Hot 100. His second album saw steady growth in sales and finally received a gold certification from the RIAA.
Later that year, production began on his third album as well as a third single called “‘Bout It, ‘Bout It.” His fourth studio album, Touching It Tonight, which peaked at No. 85 on the Billboard R&B chart, was released in 2003 and accompanied by the singles “By the Way” and “Touching It Tonight.” Before leaving the music business, the record was his final offering.
