Katie Russell was the mother of former basketball player, Bill Russell. Katie was married to Charles Russell with who he had two kids, Bill Russell and Charlie L. Russell.

Charlie L. Russell is the elder brother of Bill Russell. He was known to be a writer. He was born on March 10th, 1932, and passed away from gastric cancer on June 28th, 2013, when he was 81 years old. His play Five on the Black Hand Side was his most well-known work. Charlie completed Oakland Technical High School. While a student at Santa Rosa Junior College, he developed a passion for writing.
Charlie received a B.S. in English from the University of San Francisco in 1959 after serving in Korea with the American Army. He held the position of writer in residence at Barbara Ann Teer’s National Black Theatre in Harlem in the early 1970s.
Bill Russell on the other hand was the first black NBA player to become a superstar. He also worked as a player-coach for the Celtics for three seasons, from 1966 to 1969, making him the first black coach in North American professional sports and the first to take home a title.
Russell was one of the original entrants into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006, and he was admitted into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2007 in addition to being elected into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1975.
