Matthew Ebden is an Australian professional tennis player. He has a career-high singles ranking of world No. 39, achieved on 22 October 2018, and a doubles ranking of No. 24 achieved on 31 January 2022.
The Brisbane International was Ebden’s opening tournament of the year. Ebden lost in three sets to Radek tpánek in the first round, losing 4–6, 6–3, 3–6. Next, Ebden competed as a wildcard at the Apia International Sydney tournament.
It took Ebden three sets to upset the seventh-seeded Spaniard Marcel Granollers in the first round before falling in the second round to Marcos Baghdatis, who beat Ebden in straight sets in six games to six in the third and fourth sets to six in the fourth and fifth sets.
Ebden and Jarkko Nieminen made it to the final in doubles but fell to the Bryan Brothers. When Ebden’s next tournament came around, he was defeated in the second round by Kei Nishikori at the 2012 Australian Open, despite having a two-set lead in each of the first two sets.
Ebden made his Davis Cup debut for Australia against China, replacing Tomic in a dead rubber against Ya-Nan Ma that he won 6–4, 6–2.
Afterward, he competed at the SAP Open, where he defeated Dudi Sela in straight sets in the first round, but fell to Kevin Anderson in the second round.
After that, he lost in the first round of the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships and the qualifying round of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships. Ebden qualified for the BNP Paribas Open in the qualifying round.
His first match was against Igor Kunitsyn of Russia and he won 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 in three sets.
