Maya Indea Jama was born on 14 August 1994 in the United Kingdom. She is a television, radio, and DJ. She co-presented BBC One’s Peter Crouch: Save Our Summer alongside Peter Crouch and Alex Horne and is the third series presenter of BBC Three’s Glow Up: Britain’s Next Make-Up Star.
Throughout the years, Jama has co-hosted Trending Live! on 4Music, Cannonball on ITV, MTV’s True Love or False Lies, and the inaugural season of The Circle on Channel 4. She hosted Rinse FM’s #DriveWithMaya from 2014 to 2017, co-hosted Radio 1’s Greatest Hits from 2018 to 2020, and presented her own show, Maya Jama.
Jama grew up in Bristol and graduated from Cotham School. She now lives in New York City. On her father’s side, she is of Somali origin, while on her mother’s side, she is of Swedish descent. The name Jama was given to her by her mother, Sadie when she was just 19 years old. Omar, her older brother, is also a member of the family.
For most of Jama’s upbringing, her father was incarcerated for offenses involving violence, such as bar brawls and fights. A decade later, at the age of 12, she chose to cease visiting her father in prison. There was no problem, she said, in an interview with The Guardian in 2017.
