Is Michael Wacha Good?
Wacha was a key part of the Cardinals’ rotation as a rookie, helping them win the National League pennant in 2013. Wacha won the NLCS MVP award after pitching nearly 14 scoreless innings in two starts against the Dodgers.
The Red Sox were scheduled to play in the World Series as a result of this. Wacha pitched six innings and allowed two runs in his first start of the series, helping the Cardinals win Game 2.
Wacha was split between the Rays’ starting rotation and bullpen for the first three months of the season after signing a one-year, $3 million deal in the offseason.
Wacha had a difficult time for the Rays as a lengthy reliever. Last season, he had an 8.31 ERA as a reliever after giving up 16 earned runs in 17 1/3 innings pitched in six relief appearances.
As a result, the Rays promoted Wacha to the starting rotation. As a starter, he had a better year, going 3-5 with a 4.53 ERA in 23 starts.
While Wacha’s overall results were unimpressive, he pitched well in the final month of the season. Over 30 innings thrown, he gave up 10 earned runs while going 1-1 in five starts and one relief appearance.
Wacha’s primary pitch is the fastball, although he’s been using it less and less in recent years. Wacha threw six-seam fastballs 63.9 percent of the time in 2013. That figure was 36.2 percent last season.
Last season, Wacha’s fastball averaged 93.8 mph, with hitters whiffing on 18.3 percent of his fastballs, his best record in four seasons.
