Mike Hughes was born on February 11, 1997, and is an American football cornerback for the National Football League’s Kansas City Chiefs (NFL). He attended UCF and played football. The Minnesota Vikings selected him in the first round (30th overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Hughes was a three-sport letter winner in football, track and field, and basketball when a student at New Bern High School. He was also a quarterback. With 1,263 passing yards and 10 touchdowns in 2014, Hughes led his team to an undefeated season as well as a state championship in the NCHSAA 4A

division.

He was a member of the all-state team and competed in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas in his senior year. To play college football, Hughes committed to the University of North Carolina, where he was ranked No. 3 cornerback in North Carolina.

In 2015, Hughes was a member of the North Carolina basketball team for a single season. After an altercation in October of that year, he was suspended along with M. J. Stewart and charged with misdemeanor assault. Garden City Community College was where he spent a year after leaving the squad.
