Michael Timothy Shildt, born August 9, 1968, is a former baseball manager from the United States. When working as a scout and manager in the St. Louis Cardinals minor league system, he became the Cardinals’ first base coach in 2017 and was named manager in 2018 after Mike Matheny was fired.
He was selected National League Manager of the Year after the Cardinals advanced to the National League Championship Series in 2019.
Both the 2020 and 2021 seasons concluded in defeats in the National League Wild Card Game. On October 14, 2021, Shildt was fired as Cardinals manager.
Shildt was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, and attended Olympic High School before going on to play collegiate baseball for the University of North Carolina (UNC) Asheville Bulldogs.
After his playing career was cut short because he “couldn’t hit a curveball,” Shildt became a coach at West Charlotte High School, where he helped the baseball club win its first game in 20 years.
After graduating from high school, Shildt was employed as an assistant coach for the Charlotte 49ers baseball team by UNC Charlotte. He was in charge for five years.
During the off-season, he ran a baseball training facility in North Carolina, where he also worked as a full-time baseball coach for local kids.
