Mötley Crüe is an American heavy metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1981. The group was founded by bassist Nikki Sixx, drummer Tommy Lee, lead guitarist Mick Mars and lead singer Vince Neil. Mötley Crüe has sold over 100 million albums worldwide.
The members of Mötley Crüe have often been noted for their hedonistic lifestyles and the androgynous personae they maintained.
Mötley Crüe was formed on January 17, 1981, when bassist Nikki Sixx left the band London and began rehearsing with drummer Tommy Lee and vocalist/guitarist Greg Leon.
Lee had previously worked with Leon in a band called Suite 19. Mötley Crüe was ranked tenth on MTV’s list of “Top 10 Heavy Metal Bands of All-Time” and ninth on “VH1’s All-Time Top Ten Metal Bands”.
