Patrick Joseph Leahy is an American politician and lawyer. He is the senior United States senator from Vermont and is also the president pro tempore of the United States Senate.
Leahy was elected to the Senate for the first time in 1974. From 2012 to 2015, he was the president pro tempore. He is in charge of the Appropriations Committee in the Senate.
Leahy is a member of the Democratic Party, and he is currently serving his eighth term. In March 2022, when Representative Don Young died, he became the oldest member of Congress.
Leahy is also the last of the “Watergate Babies” in the Senate. These are Democrats who were first elected to Congress in 1974, after President Richard Nixon resigned because of the Watergate scandal.
As of 2022, Leahy is one of five people who served in Congress during Jimmy Carter’s presidency and one of three people who served during Gerald Ford’s.
Leahy is the most senior member of his state’s congressional delegation. He is also the only Democrat from Vermont who has ever been elected to the U.S. Senate.
He was the head of the Agriculture and the Judiciary committees before. From 2017 to 2021, he was the most powerful person on the Appropriations Committee.
In 2021, he became chairman. In 2001, the anthrax attacks that killed five people were aimed at both Leahy and the Senate Majority Leader at the time, Tom Daschle.
He was the one in charge of Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial. He was the first senator to be in charge of an impeachment trial of a former president.
Leahy said on November 15, 2021, that he would not run for office again in 2022.
