Penny Mordaunt is a British politician who has been serving as Minister of State for Trade Policy since 2021. A member of the Conservative Party, she has been the Member of Parliament (MP) representing Portsmouth North since 2010.
In January 2006, Mordaunt was re-elected to represent Portsmouth North in the next general election.
With an 8.6 percent Labour vote swing, she won the seat with a 7,289 majority. There were three more general elections where she was re-elected: 2015, 2017, and 2019. She served on the Public Bill Committee for the 2014 Defense Reform Act after being elected in 2010.
Mordaunt was the first woman to hold the position of Minister of State for the Armed Forces when she was appointed in 2015 after serving as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Decentralization from 2014 to 2015.
The Fire Brigades Union accused Mordaunt of “misleading MPs about guarantees provided to firefighters by fire authorities over what would happen to their pensions if they fail fitness tests” while she was Parliamentary Under-Secretary for the Department for Communities and Local Government.
There was a debate over raising the retirement age, which led to a strike by firemen.

Jennifer Mordaunt is the mother of British politician Penny Mordaunt. She states that she was called after the Arethusa-class cruiser HMS Penelope since her father was a former paratrooper. Her father served in the military.
Her mother, Jennifer (who was formerly known as Snowden), worked as a special education instructor at multiple Purbrook schools. She is related to Philip Snowden, who held the position of the first Labour Chancellor of the Exchequer, through her mother.
Mordaunt’s mother passed away from breast cancer when she was 15 years old, and after her twin brother left school, she took over as Edward’s primary caregiver. Edward was Mordaunt’s younger brother.
