Russia’s Foreign Minister is Sergey Viktorovich Lavrov. He formerly served as Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, where he held the position from 1994 to 2004.
He faces personal sanctions as a result of his role in the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Lavrov was born in Moscow on March 21, 1950, to an Armenian father from Tbilisi, Georgian SSR, and a Russian mother from Noginsk, Russian SSR.
In 1972, he graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO). Lavrov was hired as an advisor at the Soviet embassy in Sri Lanka since he was already an expert on the nation.
He also worked for Rafiq Nishonov as a translator, personal secretary, and assistant. Lavrov returned to Moscow in 1976.
He served in the USSR’s Section for International Economic Relations as a third and second secretary. He worked in analytics there, and his office collaborated with a number of international organizations, including the United Nations.
President Vladimir Putin appointed Lavrov to the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs on March 9, 2004.
He took up the position from Igor Ivanov. Lavrov was reappointed foreign minister to Prime Minister Dimitri Medvedev’s government on May 21, 2012.
