Sergey Brin is an American business magnate, computer scientist, and Internet entrepreneur. He co-founded Google with Larry Page.
He met Larry Page at a new student orientation at Stanford. After spending time together, the two men “became intellectual soul-mates and close friends,” despite their differences in opinion on many issues.
Data mining systems were a priority for Brin, while Page was interested in expanding “the concept of estimating a research paper’s value by looking at how many times it is cited in other articles.
“The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine” was written by the two of them. BackRub’s web crawler collected backlink data that Brin and Page used to design the PageRank algorithm, which they discovered could be used to create a search engine that was significantly superior to the ones that were available at the time.
Using new technology, a new algorithm was devised that used the amount and rank of backlinks to calculate a page’s rank, as well as the relevance of those hyperlinks.
A machine lab was established in Page’s dorm room and used to remove parts from cheap computers to build a gadget that connected the search engine with Stanford’s broadband campus network.
