Shane Austin Baz,( born June 17, 1999) is a Major League Baseball pitcher who currently pitches for the Tampa Bay Rays (MLB). In 2021, he made his MLB debut. Baz was born to Raj, a Lebanese father, and Tammy, an American mother.
Shane went to Concordia Lutheran High School in Tomball, Texas, for high school. He posted a 1.06 earned run average (ERA) and 46 strikeouts in 23 innings as a junior. In 2016, Baz was a part of the American national team.
His father was born in Beirut, Lebanon, and played soccer there until immigrated to the United States when he was 15 years old. Baz pitched for the Gulf Coast League Pirates in 2017, going 0–3 with a 3.80 ERA in 23+23 innings.
Baz was acquired by the Tampa Bay Rays on August 14, 2018, as a player to be named later in a trade in which the Pirates also sent Tyler Glasnow and Austin Meadows to the Rays in exchange for Chris Archer.
The Rays assigned him to the Appalachian League’s Princeton Rays. Baz was named to the United States national baseball team for the 2020 Summer Olympics, which will be contested in Tokyo in 2021, on July 2, 2021. The team came in second place after losing to Japan in the gold medal game.
