Shireen Abu Akleh was a Palestinian-American journalist who lived from 3 January 1971 until 11 May 2022. She worked for Al Jazeera’s Arabic-language station for 25 years before being assassinated on May 11, 2022, while documenting an Israeli Defense Forces raid on Jenin in the occupied West Bank.

The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed on May 11, 2022, that Abu Akleh was shot and killed by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) while reporting on IDF raids in Jenin.
Abu Akleh was present during an Israeli military raid aimed at apprehending “terror suspects.” The IDF shot Abu Akleh in the head and took her to Ibn Sina Hospital, where she was declared dead.
The assassination of Abu Akleh was termed by Al Jazeera as a “horrifying murder that violates international principles” that was carried out “in cold blood.” The network’s managing director, Giles Trendle, expressed “horror and sadness” at her death and urged for an open investigation.
President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, declared that Israeli soldiers were “totally accountable” for Abu Akleh’s killing.
Abu Akleh was “martyred by the bullets of the Israeli occupation,” according to a Palestinian official, while Hussein al-Sheikh tweeted that the “crime of silencing the word” had been “done once again, and the truth is slaughtered by the bullets of the Israeli occupation.”
Husam Zomlot, the head of the Palestinian Mission in the United Kingdom, called Abu Akleh a “valued journalist” and a close friend. Her death was reported as an assassination by another Palestinian official.
According to Kan, IDF spokesperson Ran Kochav does not think Abu Akleh was killed by IDF soldiers. He added that the IDF had offered to launch a joint inquiry, but that he did not expect “the Palestinians” to participate, adding that “the Red Crescent moved the corpse away” shortly after she was shot.
