A founding member of the Oakland, California, chapter of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club in 1957, Ralph Hubert Barger (better known by his stage name Sonny Barger; born October 8, 1938; died June 29, 2022) was an American outlaw biker.
He was also a novelist and actor. He wrote five novels, had television and movie appearances, and acted on stage.
After having an unlawful abortion, Barger’s first wife Elsie Mae (née George) passed away on February 1st, 1967, from a blood embolism.
Sharon Gruhlke, a former Livermore beauty queen, and he started dating in 1969. While he was a prisoner in Folsom State Prison in 1973, Barger married Gruhlke.
Barger had smoked heavily for years before receiving a throat cancer diagnosis in 1983. At the Fort Miley VA Medical Center in San Francisco, he was diagnosed and treated.
Stage III laryngeal carcinoma required a complete laryngectomy by Michael Tralla MD, FACS, along with bilateral functional neck dissections.
He, therefore, learned to vocalize utilizing the muscles in his esophagus as a result of having his vocal cords removed.
In 1998, Barger and his third wife Noel, as well as his stepdaughter Sarrah, moved back to Arizona, where he had previously done a jail sentence. They joined the Cave Creek chapter of the Hells Angels and worked as motorcycle mechanics.
Following a rumored domestic altercation with his wife Noel and stepdaughter Sarrah at their New River, Arizona home on March 7, 2003, deputies from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office detained Barger.
In addition to a lacerated spleen, Noel also had fractured ribs and back. Later, for violent violence, Barger received an eight-day prison term. On June 25, 2005, he wed his fourth spouse, Zorana.
In response to his prostate cancer, Barger underwent surgery in 2012. After having his prostate removed, his cancer was deemed to be curable.
