Sonny Barger, a Hells Angels member who was instrumental in bringing the outlaw motorcycle organization to worldwide fame, died on Wednesday from cancer. His death at the age of 83 was confirmed by the medical examiner.
Former attorney Fritz Clapp claims that Barger died at home. Clapp reported that Barger had been diagnosed with stage four liver cancer.
In 1957, over a decade after the first Hells Angels chapter was established in Fontana, California, Barger launched the chapter in Oakland, California.
When the founder of the Fontana chapter, Otto Freddi, was taken into custody, Barger was named national head of the organization, according to The New York Times.
In the Hells Angels, Barger got into fights, used drugs, and raced his Harley-Davidson on California’s expansive motorways when he was in charge of the organization.
As a result of his lengthy criminal record, which included charges such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, assaults with dangerous weapons, kidnapping, and drug trafficking and distribution, he was sentenced to a prison term on narcotics charges.
In the years that followed, the Hells Angels gained a reputation as a dangerous outlaw organization with branches all over the world.
