Romero was sent to Montgomery, who were promoted to the Double-A South for the start of the 2021 season. He was promoted to the Durham Bulls of the Triple-A East in July after a 1-0 record with a 1.88 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 48 innings.
This month he was named Triple-A East Pitcher of the Month for September after winning five of his five outings and posting an ERA of 0.31. Romero was 7-2 with a 3.18 ERA and seventy strikeouts in 62 13 innings in 12 starts with the Durham Bulls.
The Rays picked Romero’s contract on November 19, 2021, and he was added to the team’s 40-man roster the following day.
