American politician Tulsi Gabbard represented Hawaii’s 2nd congressional district from 2013 to 2021. She is a political commentator as well as an officer in the US Army Reserve. She received 43% of the vote in the 2002 Democratic primary, which had four candidates, to represent Hawaii’s 42nd House of Representatives district.
After that, she defeated Republican Alfonso Jimenez in the general election with 60.7% of the vote. She was the youngest woman to be elected to a state legislature in the United States at the age of 21 and the youngest legislator ever elected in Hawaii history. She was unanimously chosen in January 2013 to serve as the Democratic National Committee’s vice chair for a tenure of four years.
A ceremony held at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific saw her upgraded in the military from the rank of captain to major in October 2015. She started a petition in July 2016 calling for the Democratic Party to stop selecting superdelegates during the nomination process. She supported several Republican contenders for election in October 2022.
She made her complete exit from the Democratic Party known in the same month, citing the party’s shift in foreign policy and social issue positions as the main drivers of her decision. She did not join the Republican Party, however, and is currently unaffiliated with any other group.
