Vincente Minnelli was a stage and cinema director from the United States. Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), An American in Paris (1951), The Band Wagon (1953), and Gigi (1954) are among his classic film musicals (1958).
An American in Paris and Gigi were both nominated for Academy Awards for Best Picture, with Gigi’s director Vincente Minnelli winning Best Director.
Minnelli directed many comedies and melodramas in addition to directing some of the most well-known musicals of his time. From 1945 to 1951, he was married to Judy Garland, with whom he had a daughter, Liza Minnelli.
After the 1848 revolt against Ferdinand II and Bourbon’s authority, his paternal grandpa and great-uncle, both Sicilian revolutionaries, were forced to flee the island. While on tour with Knabe Pianos, Vincenzo met his future wife Nina Picket.
Minnelli died of emphysema and pneumonia in his Beverly Hills home on July 25, 1986, at the age of 83, after being hospitalized several times in his final year.
He was also said to be suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. He is buried at Glendale, California’s Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
Minnelli left an estate worth slightly more than US$1.1 million, with the majority of it going to his daughter Liza. He left his widow $100,000 and his Beverly Hills mansion in his will.
