What Crime Has Tammel Esco Committed?
Surveillance video captured a violent thrashing. A 67-year-old Asian woman was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Hate crimes charges have been filed against the defendant, who police claim used a racist slur before the incident.
This was reported to be a black man named, Tammel Esco. He has been charged with attempted murder as a hate crime after he was recorded on film hitting and stomping on a 67-year-old Asian woman as she sought to enter her Yonkers apartment.
On Friday around 6.15 p.m., he was apprehended at the scene and brought to the Westchester County Jail. Tammel Esco, 42, was also charged with assault in connection with the incident on Friday evening.
He allegedly hurled a racist insult at the woman before hitting her from behind as she attempted to open her apartment’s front door. He punched her once and knocked her out, then continued to punch her over 100 times.
The victim’s health is stable, however, he has facial bone fractures and brain bleeding. Esco had previously used an anti-Asian slur against the victim, according to police. The incident occurred in Yonkers, a New York City suburb; violence and anti-Asian hate crimes are expected to rise in New York in 2020 and 2021.
