While doing a Netflix comedy gig in Los Angeles, Dave Chappelle was attacked on stage. A man charged onto the stage at last night’s Netflix Is A Joke event and tackled the comedian before being taken off by security.
Jamie Foxx, who was watching the event from the Hollywood Bowl’s wing wearing a sheriff’s cap, went on stage to assist in the arrest of the assailant.
Chappelle, who generated anger in the trans community last year with provocative comments in a Netflix program, appeared unharmed and continued his routine, joking, “It was a trans man.”
Chris Rock, who took the stage later in the evening and was also treated to a violent outburst on stage at the Oscars in March, joked, “Was that Will Smith?”
Later footage appears to show the attacker receiving treatment from paramedics for a critically damaged arm before being transported to the hospital in an ambulance.
The venue stated on its website that the concert, which was named Dave Chappelle and Friends last night, would be a ‘phone-free experience,’ and that attendees would be required to place their phones in pouches.
Chappelle thanked Foxx on stage at the curtain call after the attacker was apprehended. ‘Shout out to Jamie Foxx, by the way,’ he continued. Jamie Foxx will show up in a sheriff’s cap whenever you’re in trouble.’
‘I assumed that was part of the show, I didn’t know what the f***…’ Foxx responded. ‘I grabbed the back of that n**** head,’ Chappelle said. His hair was greasy and mushy. Absorbent.’
During the contentious program, he said “gender is a reality,” leading Netflix employees to protest and widespread criticism on social media over some of his jokes.
He also expressed his support for JK Rowling, who has come under fire for comments she made about biological sex.
He declared in the special that he does not despise transgender people and gives a long tale about a trans woman comic, whom he refers to as a buddy, who came to his rescue in previous entanglements with the community.
