Edward Thomas Butler, a Welsh journalist, sports analyst, and rugby union player who earned 16 caps for Wales between 1980 and 1984, also scored two tries, lived from 8 May 1957 until 15 September 2022.

Butler gained notoriety for his vociferous support of Welsh independence.

Following his retirement from the sport, Butler began writing a weekly column for The Observer Sport’s Rugby Union section in 1991. He also contributed to The Guardian and provided commentary for the BBC alongside former England hooker Brian Moore.



When it was revealed that Butler had authored Austin Healey’s weekly column when Healey was on tour with the British and Irish Lions rugby team in Australia in 2001, he attracted some notice.

Butler published two books with a rugby theme. Additionally, he served as an ambassador for Prostate Cymru, a Welsh organization that promotes awareness of prostate cancer.
Butler supported the independence of Wales.

Eddie Butler died at the age of 65. His sudden demise occurred on 15 September 2022.

Butler had six kids and was still married to Susan at the time of his passing.

Butler actively participated in fundraising campaigns for the Velindre Cancer Center and Prostate Cymru.

Butler passed away quietly in his sleep at Ecoinka base camp in Cusco in the Andes mountains on September 15, 2022, while participating with 25 other Prostate Cymru charity walkers, including his daughter Nell, on the Inca Trail Trek to Machu Picchu, Peru. Butler was 65 years old.
