Michael Scott Matheny is the current manager of the Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball. He was a former professional baseball player in the United States. He was a catcher with the Milwaukee Brewers, Toronto Blue Jays, St. Louis Cardinals, and San Francisco Giants during his 13-year career in Major League Baseball.
Matheny, a native of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the eighth round of the 1991 MLB draft out of the University of Michigan (UM). On April 7, 1994, he made his Major League Baseball debut with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Matheny found his wife Kristen while both were students at the University of Michigan.
