Hurt, William McChord, is an actor from the United States. In the 1970s, he began acting on stage after studying at the Juilliard School.

Hurt made his cinematic debut in 1980, as a tormented scientist in Ken Russell’s science-fiction picture Altered States, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best New Star.



Hurt was nominated for three Academy Awards for Best Actor, winning for Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985), Children of a Lesser God (1986), and Broadcast News (1987).

Throughout the 1980s, Hurt continued to work as a stage actor, performing in Off-Broadway productions such as Henry V, Fifth of July, Richard II, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

In 1985, Hurt was nominated for his first Tony Award for his performance in Hurlyburly on Broadway.

Hurt started his acting career on stage before moving on to movies. He was a member of Circle Repertory Company’s acting company from 1977 till 1989.

He won an Obie Award for his debut performance in Corinne Jacker’s My Life, as well as a Theatre World Award for his work in Fifth of July, Ulysses in Traction, and Lulu in 1978.

Hurt starred as Hamlet opposite Lindsay Crouse and Beatrice Straight in Marshall W. Mason’s production in 1979.
