How good is YIMI Garcia?

Garcia has signed a one-year contract, thereby making him a rental for the remainder of the 2021 season. In 35 innings pitched in 2021, he has a 3-7 record, 3.47 ERA, 15 saves, and an 8.7 SO/9 rate.

You might notice the seven losses, and indeed, he’s mostly been used in the ninth inning this season, with a few appearances in the eighth and tenth. Dusty Baker can use him as another high-leverage reliever.

Garcia’s pitches include a four-seam fastball (96 MPH), a slider (90.5 MPH), a curveball (83.7 MPH), and a changeup (83.7 MPH) (88.3 MPH). He throws 43.6 percent fastballs and 34.3 percent sliders.

In recent years, he has reduced his use of the curveball, going from 30.8 percent in 2019 to 10.8 percent in 2020-21 and 14.7 percent in 2021-22. In 2021, his curveball has a slash line of.500/.483/.833, which isn’t great.

His curveball is mostly aimed towards left-handed batters. (Battle Savant stats)

In the last two years, his spin rates have all declined, with the curveball dropping from 2801 RPMs in 2019 to 2672 RPMs in 2021.

Garcia, on the other hand, has a fastball spin rate of 2523 RPMs, which is among the greatest in baseball. In baseball, his curveball spin is still in the top 75th percentile, while his fastball is in the 94th percentile. The fastball will be helped by the power slider.

His WHIP of 1.21 is higher than his lifetime norm of 1.02, but let’s look at the sabermetrics in more detail.

According to Fangraphs, Garcia’s FIP in 2021 is 4.17, which is somewhat lower than the average MLB pitcher’s FIP of 4.20.

Garcia’s xERA (exit velocity-adjusted ERA) is 4.63. He’s got xERAs of 2.75 (2015), 2.68 (2020), and 2.97 in the past (2019).
