Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin, a Soviet pilot and cosmonaut, was born on March 9, 1934, and died on March 27, 1968. He was the first human to journey into space. On April 12, 1961, Gagarin completed one orbit of the Earth in the Vostok 1 capsule.
After reaching this crucial milestone in the Space Race, he became an international celebrity, obtaining multiple medals and titles, including Hero of the Soviet Union, his country’s highest honour.
