Coolio was an American rapper, record producer, and actor. Coolio achieved mainstream success in the mid-to-late 1990s with his albums It Takes a Thief (1994), Gangsta’s Paradise (1995), and My Soul (1997).

Coolio was born on August 1, 1963 in Monessen, Pennsylvania, but his family relocated to Compton, California, not long after his birth.

Before beginning his career as a rap artist, he received his education at Compton Community College and worked in a variety of occupations, including security at Los Angeles International Airport and volunteer firefighting.



After making connections in the L.A. rap scene, Coolio ended up becoming a member of the group WC and the Maad Circle in 1991. The group was led by the rapper WC.

On the debut album of the band, titled Ain’t a Damn Thing Changed, as well as on the single “Dress Code,” he is recognized as a co-contributor for his work.

It Takes a Thief was Coolio’s first solo album, and it was released in 1994 after he had signed with Tommy Boy Records. The lead track, titled “Fantastic Voyage,” was played often on MTV and reached its highest position on the Billboard Hot 100 at number three.
