The tradition of rolling Easter eggs at the White House dates back to 1878 when President Rutherford B. Hayes decided to open the White House on the Monday after Easter to any youngsters who wished to roll eggs for the holiday.

During the 1981 presidential campaign, President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan organized a hunt for wooden eggs emblazoned with the autographs of celebrities.

Wooden eggs quickly gained popularity as the official White House Egg Roll memento. Designed to reflect the year’s unique theme, the eggs are imprinted with the signatures of President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

The White House’s South Lawn will be filled with hundreds of youngsters on Monday for the annual Easter Egg Roll.
