He was born July 20, 1947, in Autlán de Navarro in Jalisco, Mexico. At the age of five and age eight, Carlos learned to play the violin and the guitar under the training of his father, who was a mariachi musician.

Santana’s family moved from Autlán to Tijuana which is on the border with the U.S. They later moved to San Francisco, California, where his father had steady work to support his family. It is known that between the ages of 10 and 12, Santana was sexually abused by an American man who brought him across the border from Mexico to America.

Santana’s passion for music was greatly influenced by Ritchie Valens at that time when there were very few Mexicans involved in American rock music.

Santana is a graduate of James Lick Middle School. He got admission to attend the California State University, Northridge and Humboldt State University, but he made a choice not to attend college.
