Clayton Walter Holmes is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the New York Yankees. He made his Major League Baseball debut in 2018 with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Holmes attended Slocomb High School in Slocomb, Alabama, and was picked by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the ninth round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft.
Despite his pledge to Auburn, he signed with the Pirates and received a $1.2 million signing bonus while opting out of his college baseball commitment.
Holmes, a native of State College, Pennsylvania, made his professional debut with the State College Spikes in 2012 and stayed with them the entire season, going 5–3 with a 2.28 ERA in 13 starts.
He pitched for the West Virginia Power in 2013, going 5–6 with a 4.08 ERA in 26 appearances (25 starts). In 2014, he underwent Tommy John surgery and was forced to miss the entire season.
He returned to baseball in 2015 and played three rehab games for the Gulf Coast League Pirates before being sent to the Bradenton Marauders.
He made six starts for Bradenton, striking out 16 batters in 23 innings while posting a 2.74 ERA. Holmes pitched for the Altoona Curve in 2016, going 10–9 with a 4.22 ERA in 26 games.
