Darwinzon David Hernández Afanador is a Venezuelan Major League Baseball pitcher who currently pitches for the Boston Red Sox (MLB).
He bats and throws left-handed and stands at 6 feet 2 inches tall (1.88 m) and weighs 245 pounds (111 kg). In August 2013, Hernández signed as an international free agent with the Boston Red Sox.
In 2014, he debuted professionally with the Dominican Summer League Red Sox, appearing in 14 games and posting a 1-1 record with a 2.89 ERA.
In 2018, Hernández pitched for the Salem Red Sox of Class A Advanced and the Portland Sea Dogs of Double-A. After the 2018 season, the Red Sox added Hernández to their 40-man roster.
For the first time, Hernández was added to Boston’s major league active roster on April 23, as the 26th man in a doubleheader.
After the game, he was optioned back to Portland, where he made his MLB debut in 2019. He was called back, however, he was delayed due to COVID19.
Hernández was promoted to the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox on June 15. Hernández started the 2021 season in the Boston bullpen.
He was placed on the disabled list on July 31 due to a right oblique strain. On September 10, he rejoined the team.
