Donald Arthur Mattingly was born on April 20, 1961, in New York City. He is the first baseman for the Miami Marlins of Major League Baseball (MLB). He is now serving as the manager of the Miami Marlins (MLB).
Mattingly was drafted by the New York Yankees in the first round of the 1979 amateur draft after graduating from high school in Evansville, Indiana. After a four-year tenure with the Yankees’ Minor League Baseball organization, he made his major league debut at first base for the team in 1982. He was named to the American League All-Star team six times (AL).
He is the best first baseman in the history of Major League Baseball, having won nine Gold Glove Awards and three Silver Slugger Awards during his career. From 1991 through 1995, he served as the captain of the New York Yankees baseball team. Despite the fact that he never won a World Series, he is one of just two players in the team’s history who has never had his jersey retired by the organization.
In 2004, he worked as a staff member for Manager Joe Torre. In 2008, he joined Torre in becoming manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, a position he held until his retirement in 2011. After the 2015 season, he decided to leave the Dodgers. In 2016, he was named manager of the Miami Marlins, a position he has held since.
