Alex Verdugo is the son of Tucsonans Joe and Shelly Verdugo. Alex’s father is from Mexico; whereas, his mother is from Minnesota.
Verdugo attended Sahuaro High School in Tucson, Arizona, and right after high school, the Los Angeles Dodgers chose Verdugo in the second round of the 2014 Major League Baseball draft.
He signed with the Dodgers, renouncing his obligation to play school baseball at Arizona State University.
In 49 games for the Arizona League Dodgers, he hit .347 and was granted with post-season Arizona League All-Star praises and Baseball America Rookie association elite player respect.
He was relegated to the Class-A Great Lakes Loons of the Midwest League to begin 2015.
He was chosen to the post-season elite player group after he hit .295 out of 101 games.
Verdugo likewise got a late-season promotion to the Advanced-Class A Rancho Cucamonga Quakes of the California League where he played in 23 games and hit .385.
