Since the virus was discovered, most instances of monkeypox have been reported in Western and Central Africa. At least nine persons who just returned from Nigeria have been infected with monkeypox, according to McQuiston, who spoke to reporters at a recent news conference about the disease.
In the United States, monkeypox instances have been found before, including two patients who had traveled to Nigeria in 2021.
In 2003, there were also 47 confirmed and probable cases in the United States. According to the CDC, these illnesses were caused by animals brought into the country from Ghana.
People who have never traveled to West Africa or other locations where monkeypox is common to have recently been diagnosed with the disease. Those infected had flown to Canada and Europe in late April and early May, where instances were documented.

According to the Victorian Department of Health, the first case of the monkeypox in Australia was found in a man who became unwell after traveling to the United Kingdom.
He went to his primary care physician complaining of symptoms that were consistent with monkeypox. The NSW Department of Health has stated that they will collaborate closely with their peers located throughout Australia in order to monitor any cases.
