Kathleen Courtney Hochul is an American lawyer and politician. Hochul served as New York’s 57th governor and has held the position since August 24, 2021
. She is the Democratic Party’s first female governor and the state’s first governor from upstate New York since the 1930s.
Hochul was appointed Erie County clerk in 2007 after serving on the Hamburg town board and as deputy Erie County clerk. In 2007, she was elected to a full term as Erie County clerk and was re-elected in 2010.
Hochul won a four-candidate special election in New York’s 26th congressional district in May 2011 to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of then-Representative Chris Lee, becoming the district’s first Democrat in 40 years.
She was a United States Representative from 2011 to 2013. Hochul was defeated for reelection in 2012 by Chris Collins, who modified the district’s boundaries and demographics during the decennial reapportionment process. Hochul later worked as a government relations executive for M&T Bank in Buffalo.

Kathy Hochul is married to William J. Hochul Jr. William is a former United States Attorney for the Western District of New York who is currently the Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary of Delaware North, a hotel and casino firm. Kathy and Williams have two children together.
