Naoya Inoue is a Japanese professional boxer. He is a three-division world champion and currently a unified bantamweight world champion, having held the WBA (Super), IBF, Ring magazine titles since 2019, and the WBC title since June 2022.
A plan to have WBA “Regular” bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell (29-2-1, 13 KOs) defend his title against Inoue, who he originally defeated in 2014, was first reported by promoter Eddie Hearn on February 14, 2018, to Sky Sports.

However, McDonnell said he wanted major challenges instead of moving up to super bantamweight in 2018, and that he saw Inoue as a good opponent to push him.
At a press conference on March 6, Inoue announced his bout with McDonnell for May 25, 2018, at the Ota-City General Gymnasium in Tokyo, Japan.
An early left hook to the top of McDonnell’s head sent him tumbling to the mat, which was followed by a two-punch combination culminating in another left hook to the body.
Inoue knocked him down with a succession of vicious punches, including a clean left hook that seemed to confuse McDonnell’s faculties. After less than a minute of fighting, the referee declared Inoue the winner by TKO.
