Penny Marshall, full name Carole Penny Marshall was known to be an American actress, director and producer. She was best known for her role as Laverne DeFazio on the television sitcom Laverne & Shirley where she received three nominations for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy for her portrayal.

Penny was born on October 15, 1943, in The Bronx, New York in the United States of America. She died on December 17, 2018, in Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles, California at the age of 75. Her cause of death was a cardiopulmonary failure, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus type 1.

Penny made her directorial debut in 1986 with Jumpin’ Jack Flash and she also directed Big, in 1988. Big became the first film directed by a woman to gross more than $100 million at the U.S. box office. Other movies that were directed by her, earned several credits. Her movie, Awakenings 1990 was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Some movies she directed are A League of Their Own in 1992, Renaissance Man in 1994, The Preacher’s Wife, in 1996, Riding in Cars with Boys in 2001, Cinderella Man and Bewitched in 2005. Penny did not oy direct films but episodes of TV series as well.

Penny Marshall was born to Marjorie Irene (née Ward) who was a tap dance teacher and ran the Marjorie Marshall Dance School, and Anthony Wallace Marshall, a director of industrial films and later a producer.
