Shinzo Abe

Shinzo Abe was a Japanese politician who served as prime minister of Japan and President of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) from 2006 to 2007 and again from 2012 to 2020. He was the longest-serving prime minister in Japanese history.

To become Japan’s longest-serving prime minister, he led the LDP to two more landslides in 2014 and 2017. As of August 2020, Abe will announce his second resignation as prime minister due to an increase in his ulcerative colitis.

On September 16, the Diet voted to replace him with Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga. Abe was a right-wing Japanese nationalist who was usually regarded as a conservative by political pundits.

One of Nippon Kaigi’s members, he was an advocate for rejecting the role of government compulsion in WWII recruitment of comfort women, which led to a tense relationship with South Korea.

He advocated changing Article 9 of the pacifist Japanese constitution to allow Japan to maintain armed troops, making him a hard-liner on Japanese defense policy.

For his part, he proposed new security laws in 2015 to allow Japan to exercise collective security. This measure was contentious and met with a huge number of demonstrations before it was passed.

Abenomics, the label given to Abe’s government’s economic policies, which included monetary easing, fiscal stimulus, and structural reforms, became a household name around the world during Abe’s premiership.
