Walker began his professional radio career by working at Sheffield’s Hallam FM. After winning a competition for young sports commentators, he earned work experience.
Walker began a four-year run as a sports broadcaster and analyst for Manchester’s Key 103 radio station in 1999.
He hosted the regular midweek sports show and also served as the resident sports correspondent for Mike Toolan’s breakfast show throughout his stint at the station.
Walker began his career in television with a six-month stint with Granada Television in Manchester, where he worked as a pundit on the Football League Review show before joining the BBC regional news show North West Tonight.
He was nominated for a number of awards during this time and won the Royal Television Society Sports Award for Regional Sports Presenter of the Year in 2005.
Because he was covering the Champions League final in Istanbul, he was unable to attend the ceremony.
